Bewsey Lodge Primary School, Warrington

Value: £3m
Client: Warrington Borough Council
Architect: Stride Treglown

The Bewsey Lodge Primary School project involved the refurbishment of an existing Hall and ancillary areas and the construction of 2 new wings with a combined total floor area of approx 2,300m2.  This project is one of three schools BCM have recently undertaken for Warrington Borough Council.

BCM undertook detailed design duties and led the design and construction team in respect of the sustainability credentials. The solutions were appraised, designed and market tested at an early enough stage to go beyond the client’s requirements for carbon reduction.

BCM, along with the design team, utilised the BIM process for both the new build and refurbishment elements of the project. Bewsey Lodge Primary School is a good example of a challenging project which is a mixture of new build and existing with many physical and software related interfaces.

Our considerable Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM) expertise fits in very neatly with BIM and brings a great deal of certainty to the early stages of the design and results in much better performing buildings and keeping a lid on the capital costs. BIM also allowed for a smooth collaboration between the design team resulting in a shortened design period and early start on site

  • BCM strategy included LED lighting to reduce running and maintenance costs.
  • The use of BIM allowed BCM to engage with the Client at an early stage and enhance the communication process.
  • The use of efficient mechanical and electrical equipment such as inverter drives on motors and daylight linked auto dimmable luminaires, reducing ongoing services energy costs.
  • Mechanical ventilation fitted with heat recovery devices with efficiency rates of 75%, providing comfortable internal environment.
  • The use of energy efficient controls ensuring environmental conditions are monitored and controlled to close parameters.
  • The remodelled School achieved 29% energy saving from the existing building.
  • The remodelled school achieved 27% carbon emissions saving from the existing building.
