The Student Services Centre at Harper Adams University College is a landmark, BREEAM Excellent building at the heart of the agricultural University College Campus.  This building was a phased redevelopment of two 1960's buildings.

BCM were appointed to develop cost effective energy efficient servicing strategies, appraise them, guide the Client through the strategy selection process and subsequently develop the selected strategy into a detailed design package.

The selected strategy is energy efficient, cost effective and makes use of a nearby district heating scheme which incorporates a Biomass boiler fuel from on-site farm waste materials such as straw.

The selected BCM strategy comprised:

  • Utilising the thermal mass of steel frame and concrete floor construction to minimise cooling
  • Solar control glazing
  • Heat recovery on ventilation
  • Presence detection lighting controls
  • Zoned heating and ventilation so they only run when required
  • Heating and hot water via district heating scheme fuelled with Biomass and Gas 

Benefits / Achievements

The resulting building strategy as set out above achieved, at no cost premium to conventional solutions:-

  • 13% reduction (7.3 tonnes) in carbon emissions beyond the Building Regulations
  • 25% on site renewable energy (Biomass)
  • The building is energy efficient and has low running costs
  • BREEAM ‘Excellent’
